Accounting Training

While getting your accounting education is unquestionably the best way to begin preparing for a career in accounting, it's important to make the most of the time you spend in school.

Maximizing your accounting training is as simple as thinking ahead and making a few well thought-out decisions. Here are some tips to guide you on your way.

1. Brush Up on Your Computer Skills

You have to be computer savvy to be an accountant these days. Start polishing your tech skills as soon as possible—accountants use computer software to do everything from processing financial records to auditing systems to analyzing budgets.

2. Get Some Experience

Coursework alone does not a resume make. Getting an internship or working on a project for a company or family friend can be a wonderful experience that will both introduce you to the world of professional accounting and show potential employers that you can apply your education to the workplace. Internships, summer jobs and the like are also excellent opportunities to network and meet potential contacts and mentors who can offer invaluable help.

3. Stand Out by Focusing In

Accounting is divided into several major areas, including public accounting, management accounting, forensic accounting, government accounting and internal auditing. During your accounting training, try to decide on a main area of interest. Take several classes relating to that specialization to make your resume as comprehensive as possible when you go job hunting.

4. Step Outside the Field of Accounting

It is incredibly useful to take courses outside of accounting that are still related to the field. For instance, you might consider taking a class in budget analysis or information technology consulting to increase the scope of your knowledge.

5. Learn a Language

In this increasingly global age, knowing a second language will open innumerable doors. Accounting firms represent multinational companies and prize their employees who can communicate with these international partners.
