Business school rankings guides are a lot like car reviews: the "best" school depends upon the people who rank it and the factors that the guide considers.

The Wall Street Journal, for example, surveys recruiters. In contrast, US News asks business school deans, MBA program directors and recruiters to rank schools. These different points of view—combined with the types of questions each guide asks—often have conflicting results. The Wall Street Journal ranks Dartmouth's Tuck School of Business as the top MBA program, but US News prefers Stanford.

MBA school rankings information is a tool that complements the detailed research you conduct on business programs. You should find schools with the specific programs you want and request information from each before you make decisions about where to apply. In the end, rankings can only tell you so much—it is best to read school fact sheets individually to evaluate how well the program might fit.
