Executive MBA or EMBA programs typically admit only mid- to senior-level managers, and they are designed to build senior-level leadership skills. These programs are primarily for high-achievers who are looking to enhance their education without disrupting a successful career.
Consequently, classes for the Executive MBA program are often held on Friday and Saturday of every other week; on this alternating weekend schedule, programs usually take two years to complete.
Executive MBA programs are not limited to this format, however. Some programs may include classes held in the evening, or on evenings and weekends; a few may be intensive daytime programs, and some are accelerated and may require only 12 to 18 months to complete.
Acceptance rates for candidates pursuing an EMBA is higher than for conventional MBA programs. For example, UCLA's 2007 EMBA acceptance rate was 59 percent while its traditional full-time MBA program had a student acceptance rate of only 20 percent. The drawback is there are fewer EMBA programs to apply to so applicants will need to find a program that suits their schedule.

Who Earns an Executive MBA?
The ideal aspirant for an EMBA is a professional who fits the following profile:
- Has 10 to 14 years of experience, some of which is managerial
- Has maintained a steady progress through the company in which they are employed
- Is a candidate for senior management
- Has an employer who is willing to invest in sponsoring the employee for an EMBA program
Executive MBA Programs are Unique
One of the unique aspects of the Executive MBA program is its collective education experience. Generally in an EMBA program, business professionals who have been accepted into the program begin classes together and then move through the program curriculum and complete EMBA degree requirements as a group. This encourages trust, and promotes the critical business concept of teamwork.
