An associate's degree in information technology (IT) offers graduates the technical training and business knowledge necessary to enter the IT field. An IT associate's degree also prepares students to eventually complete a bachelor's degree.
Programs typically offer a thorough foundation in software, hardware and network development, and attempt to instill an understanding of how information technology impacts and helps support a business's goals.
In general, the curriculum for an IT associate's degree emphasizes network administration, programming and web development. Classes may include specific computer languages, programming practices, client-server networks, web publishing, and database and spreadsheet applications. Additionally, students should expect to take some core general education courses, such as math, communication and writing.
With an IT associate's degree, graduates qualify for entry-level information technology positions in a variety of public, private and non-profit organizations. Some find employment as application developers, programmers and programming analysts; others work as web site developers and network specialists or technicians.
