An information technology (IT) degree trains students for a wide variety of career opportunities in the dynamic, cutting-edge field of IT.
Armed with a portfolio that combines technical expertise and business skills, graduates of an information technology program give themselves an edge toward building rewarding and lucrative careers in a wide range of business and technical arenas.
Types of Information Technology Degrees
Undergraduates can earn a bachelor's degree in information technology, which encompasses multiple aspects of IT, such as database and software development, information systems management and networking technology. A bachelor's IT degree can qualify graduates for jobs in hardware and software engineering, corporate information technology, multimedia and web development, and technical project management.
As an alternative, an associate's degree in information technology offers a practical base of knowledge that prepares graduates for entry-level IT roles. Associate's programs typically focus on a specific set of career skills, and students can complete these 1- to 2-year programs in less time than a bachelor's degree.
For graduate students, common advanced IT degree options include a master's in information technology management or an MBA with a concentration in IT. With either of these credentials, graduates can qualify for senior-level contributor and managerial roles in an organization's IT group.
While full-time students typically finish their undergraduate or master's IT degree within a specified number of years (typically four years for undergraduates, two years for graduates), most colleges offer a variety of part-time, weekend and online programs that working adults can complete at their own pace.
IT professionals—both with an existing degree and in the process of working toward their degree—can also obtain certifications to demonstrate their technical knowledge and training, expand their career opportunities and increase their earning potential. Many different IT certifications exist, and different employers may place different values on each one. Before pursuing certification, carefully research which options offer the right credentials for your career.
