A master's in business administration, or MBA, equips graduates with the practical skills and business expertise to hold advanced leadership positions across industries. Open to students from a wide range of academic backgrounds, MBA degree programs typically include comprehensive training in management theory and application, technology and communication.
In general, course work for an MBA degree program covers advanced management concepts and best practices, organizational behavior and design, ethical leadership, strategic planning and international business, as well as core business subjects, including accounting, finance, information technology and marketing.
Students can choose a full-time MBA or part-time MBA program. Full-time MBA programs typically take two years to complete. Undergraduate students can enter into a BA/MBA track where they earn their bachelor's degree and MBA in a total of five years.
Designed for working adults, part-time MBA programs come in different forms and usually involve weeknight or weekend classes. Examples include the following:
- Standard Part-Time MBA - For students with or without management experience who work full-time during the day. Part-time and full-time MBA programs generally cover the same material, and students typically graduate in two to three years.
- Accelerated MBA - For individuals with industry experience and advanced knowledge of the fundamentals of management. Typically, these programs spend less time on core business subjects and limit opportunities to specialize. Students can graduate in 12 to 18 months.
- Executive MBA - For mid- to senior-level managers with at least 10 years of work experience. Students can graduate in approximately two years, although some schools offer an accelerated track.
With an MBA degree, graduates qualify for an extensive list of management roles. From corporate controllers to executive directors in nonprofit agencies and from independent consultants to business owners, graduates of MBA degree programs position themselves for diverse professional opportunities throughout their careers.
