Most online classes last about five weeks and require less than twenty hours a week of work time. While even this flexible time commitment can seem daunting, it is indisputable that online bachelor's degrees are becoming both more popular and more lucrative. Additionally, bachelor's degrees are highly regarded in the business world; the US Bureau of Labor Statistics states that people with a bachelor degree in business earn an average of $54,689.

Plan well and be proactive

Despite these advantages, it can still be difficult to make time to do your reading or watch a lecture. Many people find that the best way to make their online bachelor's degree program fit into a busy, often hectic, schedule is to take active, concrete steps to maximize their time and effectiveness:

  • Get into a study routine where you work at roughly the same time every day or week.
  • Be clear and vocal—to both your family and yourself—when you are in "study mode."
  • Create a workspace with your computer and school materials where you can remove yourself from at-home distractions.
  • Keep track of deadlines. If they are too vague or spread out, set self-imposed deadlines to make sure you are working at a steady, consistent rate.
  • Log onto your course websites every day. Even if you're not going to be watching a lecture or writing comments that day, log in to stay on track and keep yourself up to date with any new postings or discussions.
  • Give yourself a break sometimes. Life is hectic and, especially with the online programs that charge on a course-by-course basis, there is no rush to the finish line. If you need to, put your program on pause while you deal with work and family—you will be able to tend to your responsibilities and eventually focus better on your degree when you do return to your course of study.
