Golden Gate University

Golden Gate University (GGU), founded in 1901 in San Francisco, has always been a place where working adults come for a career-focused higher education. Now, over 60,000 graduates later, GGU still caters to professionals by offering day, evening, weekend and online classes at convenient locations throughout the San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles and Seattle. GGU is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges and is known for its innovative educational programs.

The School of Taxation

Golden Gate University has earned a national reputation for providing the most comprehensive and applicable tax education available. The program is one of the largest, most respected graduate tax programs in the country, with many of the Big Four firms hiring GGU graduates and regularly sending their employees to the university to update their tax education. All programs are based on practical application. They are highly focused and prepare students to be knowledgeable tax professionals. Programs are offered full-time and part-time in San Francisco, Los Angeles and Seattle as well as online through GGU's CyberCampus.

The School of Taxation has enrolled more students over the last 30 years than any other tax program in the nation. The focus on providing students with practical skills and hands-on experience has earned the respect of the industry’s leading firms. Not only do major accounting firms actively recruit its graduates, they also rely on Golden Gate University for continuing education and professional training for their employees.

As the nation’s leading tax school, GGU offers a wide variety of tax classes with more flexibility than any other university in the country. The large adjunct faculty allows a greater variety of classes within many areas of specialization. As a small, private institution, it can respond quickly to new developments in the industry.

A Faculty of Top Tax Practitioners

Our full- and part-time faculty members all have advanced degrees in law and/or taxation, and many are certified public accountants. Most are current practicing tax professionals who bring years of experience and cutting-edge expertise into the classroom. GGU has an advisory board of working practitioners, many from leading firms, who review curricula regularly to ensure that the most important issues affecting tax professionals are addressed.

Immediately Applicable Skills

Class size averages 15 students, with faculty using a teaching approach combining application of theory and critical thinking with practical problem solving. This approach provides skills and experience students can take from the classroom to the office. For full-time master’s students, this practical approach includes creating a possible tax season internship.

Practical Tools for Learning

Students are given thorough instruction in current laws, regulations, concepts, practices and trends of the discipline. The School of Tax faculty write their own textbooks for many of the courses offered, which bring together code, case law, rulings, regulations and practical case studies based on real-life tax problems. From the very start, students learn the actual law they need to know on the job, and always have complete Internet access to tax reference libraries.

A Diverse Student Body

At GGU, students bring to the classroom a broad range of work experience and personal backgrounds. Many come to the program with impressive credentials, and most continue to work while they complete their degree.
