Distance Learning at WPI

The Department of Management at WPI has been a leader in technology-based management distance education since 1979 when the Advanced Distance Learning Network (ADLN) was established. You can earn your masters degree completely online with no residency requirement - choose from the MBA or master of science in one of three technology management areas. WPI is one of the few colleges that offers completely online graduate programs that are AACSB accredited. Attend class whenever it is convenient for you. Log into your course website at 24/7 and view your course materials, listen to the professor and submit your homework assignments.

But don't let the convenience deceive you; be prepared to work hard for your graduate degree at WPI. The standards for the online, part time program are the exact same as the campus program. As a distance student, you will get the same courses, content and material as the on-campus students. Also, the distance courses are developed and taught by the same high quality faculty that teach on campus. Interaction between the distance learning student and the professor and among the students occurs through various communication channels, including e-mail, fax, telephone and Internet discussion boards.

In fact, at WPI you can combine online courses and campus courses into one degree if your schedule and location permit. Since the online and campus programs are identical, you have the freedom and flexibility to take your courses and degree in the way that is best for you.

Students work in virtual teams and form associations with fellow students who are employed in growth industries. This is the MBA for you if you want to work hard and learn hard.

The full MBA degree program can be completed in as few as three years with no on-campus residency requirement. Courses are delivered through a course website which allows faculty to use a wide variety of instruction tools including PowerPoint slides, streaming audio, web conferencing, video clips, and discussion boards.

Master of Science in Information Technology

In keeping with the rapid growth of the information technology sector, WPI launched the Master of Science program in Information Technology. The MSIT program is designed for full immersion into information technology, while still providing the comprehensive management principles necessary for understanding the application of IT to business and of business to IT.

As part of this 35 credit hour program, students choose from one of six different leading edge concentrations in the field of information technology:

• IT and Entrepreneurship
• IT Applications Development

• Manufacturing and Service IT Applications

These concentrations provide additional depth in particular areas of IT, or IT management, beyond the core courses. Students can choose a more managerial specialty, a more technical specialty or specialties that mix management and technology or focus on a specific functional area.

Master of Science in Marketing and Technological Innovation

Technology-oriented environments have unique marketing challenges. Technological advances have changed the very nature of marketing and because technology and marketing management have never been more strongly interdependent than they are today, WPI created the Master of Science in Marketing and Technological Innovation (MSMTI), a 32 credit hour program, focusing specifically on the demands of developing and marketing new products and services in the technological world. Students in the MSMTI program acquire the ability to recognize opportunities, create and implement marketing solutions, and develop the leadership and interpersonal skills necessary for success in their industry.

Master of Science in Operations Design and Leadership

Today's business environments deal constantly with changes requiring leadership for operational solutions. The Master of Science in Operations Design and Leadership (MSODL) is a comprehensive 35 credit hour operations management program that provides balance between service and production management, with an emphasis on the leadership skills needed to facilitate organizational improvement.

The MSODL program offers the option to concentrate in either supply chain management or process design, or to customize the degree with a broad selection of electives focusing in-depth on issues in operations management and related management areas. Students explore a broad range of operational topics such as risk management, lean process design, modeling and optimization and global logistics.
