students completing their bachelor degree

Accelerated Bachelor's degree-completion programs are designed to allow busy working adults to complete their undergraduate degrees. Typical students entering this type of program have earned some college credit in the past and, after working for anywhere from a few years to a few decades, have decided to earn their undergraduate degree. Because returning to a traditional undergraduate program is not a realistic option for many working adults, many schools are now offering this type of program.

Reasons for entering an accelerated bachelor's degree completion program include:

  • Attaining a sense of personal achievement
  • Pursuing a promotion or new job that requires a bachelor's degree
  • Desire to study with adults who have work experience
  • Gaining higher earning potential
  • Obtaining the education necessary to enter a graduate degree program (i.e. an MBA)
  • Meeting the requirements of a new supervisor or employer

Accelerated Schedule

Most bachelor's completion programs operate on an accelerated schedule and accept transfer credits, which shortens the time it takes to complete the program. Check with your school to verify which of your past credits will transfer. Accelerated formats may also enable you to qualify for full-time financial aid, even if you're attending part-time. For example, some programs break classes down into eight-week sessions, allowing you to focus on one or two classes at a time, even though your total semester credit hours satisfy the full-time requirements.

College Credit for Work Experience

Many Bachelor's Completion programs also accept the College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) as equivalency for college credits. The CLEP is administered by the College Board, the same organization which administers the SAT. Acceptance of CLEP credits will vary from school to school, but may allow you to complete your degree in a shorter period of time.
